Christmas Outreach Program: Filipino - Chinese Home for the Aged Women

The CKS College Student Executive Council in cooperation with the College’s Faculty club conducted an outreach last December 7, 2016 at the Filipino-Chinese Home for the Aged Women to celebrate the Christmas season.

The Filipino-Chinese Women’s Association was organized on March 1952 to aid Madame Chiang Kai Shek in her anti-Japanese propaganda. Out of the group’s concern and compassion for a group of elderly women who were homeless and without family, the association’s president, Mrs. James V. Limpe (Teh Siu Yong), established the Filipino-Chinese Home for the Aged Women in 1972. Currently, the home’s 11 residents stay within the 5000 square meter compound in Malinta, Valenzuela.

Students were able to share their blessings by donating gift baskets containing fruits, milk, diapers and toiletries to the residents.

Senior High School Christmas Caroling Competition

It really began to look a lot like Christmas last December 2, 2016 as the Senior High School students had the elimination round of their Christmas caroling competition, an event organized by the Senior High School Student Government. The competition was fierce as students from twelve different sections showcased their musical talent and creativity in singing iconic Christmas songs and even original compositions. The performances were judged by Mr. Allan Villaverde, Ms. Christine Cua, and Mr. Vincent Marzonia based on the students' creativity, originality, and overall performance. All groups showed exceptional talent - a proof that the students of Chiang Kai Shek College are not limited to academic excellence. However, only six groups, three groups per year level, could advance to the next round. It was a tough decision to make, but in the end, the groups that got chosen were from 11-C, 11-F, 11-G, 12-C, 12-D, and 12-H. The next round will be held on December 9, 2016, wherein three more groups will be eliminated.

DLSU PhD Students Visit CKS College

Last November, 28, 2016, a group of six (6) PhD students under the instruction of Sr. Teresa Yasa, FI, PhD, one of DLSU’s premiere educators in the field of Educational Leadership and Management, paid a visit to Chiang Kai Shek College.  The aforementioned students are under the doctorate program of Educational Leadership and Management (ELMD) of Bro. Andrew Gonzalez FSC College of Education, De La Salle University.  As of press time, the group explained why it had chosen the school, and it is due to the prestige of the school in terms of its students’ academic performance.  Hence, the aim of the visit is to learn from CKS College in terms of how it manages its curriculum and its delivery of instruction.

“Specifically, great interest is felt in learning from the school’s experiences of success and meeting challenges in educational leadership and management in the context of 21st Century basic and tertiary Filipino-Chinese education in the Philippines” explains Sr. Yasa, FI, PhD.

The dynamic nun adds that in view of the field study, the following learning objectives have been drawn to maximize the field study visit in Chang Kai Shek College’ best practices and learning experience:

a)      Learn the unique features of the school’s curriculum, and how such features meaningfully contribute to the welfare of the community or society;

b)      Learn how the curriculum and the school’s philosophy, values and goals statements trickle from its vision and mission statements; how the ideal graduate of Chang Kai Shek College is derived from the school’s vision and mission statements;

c)      Learn how Faculty contributes to the management of the curriculum in terms of daily and effective delivery of instruction.

The visit started with a conference in the Oracle Room of the Main Campus; Chiang Kai Shek College academic heads namely Mrs. Cynthia Yap, Junior High School Supervisor, together with her year-level coordinators and subject area coordinators; Mrs. Li-Ling Ma, directress for Chinese Academic Affairs; and Mrs. Cynthia Isidro, Head of the Guidance and Counseling answered in a detailed fashion all the questions given to them by the inquisitive group of PhD students.

Afterwards, a campus tour in the Main and Narra campuses immediately followed.

Indeed, such educative practice and collaboration is good and refreshing for both parties, for people involved in the science and art educating the youth should enact substantial and sustainable changes in efficiency and productivity, a new way of thinking or paradigm that builds efficiency and a desire for continual learning be integrated into institutional structures. The strategy of benchmarking is important both conceptually and practically, and can be used for improving administrative processes as well as instructional models at schools, colleges and universities by examining processes and models at other schools and adapting their techniques and approaches.

Engaging in this scholarly endeavor is analogous to the human learning process, and it has been described by many scholars as a method of teaching an institution how to improve (Leibfried & McNair 1992). Hence, CKS College welcomes such collaborations to further respond to its academic obligation of fostering progress through education not just for its learners but also for those learners beyond its walls.

Graduation Pictorial: Class of 2017

The Senior Organization spearheaded the Graduation Pictorial of CKS College Batch 2017 held last November 22 – 26, 2016 at the 5th floor. Two rooms were reserved for the said event, one for the make-up and dress-up section, while the other was the pictorial room.

              Before the said event, the Senior Organization canvassed studios for the said pictorial and came up with top 3 choices, namely, Majicus Junctra Corporation (MJC), Images by Child’s Play, and CJC Photography Asia. Chosen representatives of the organization were asked to have a test shot with these studios to assure the quality of the services that they render. A votation was then made during the collection of the Senior Organization fees on which studio the students prefer to take the graduation pictorial. As the collection and votation concluded, the votes revealed the following numbers: MJC – 5, Images by Child’s Play – 108, CJC Photography Asia – 91, making Images by Child’s Play the chosen studio for the college’s graduation pictorial.

              The graduation package consisted of 3 shots: 1 toga picture, 1 barong/filipiniana or corporate attire picture, and 1 creative shot. The studio also offered extra services such as “barkada” pictorials, extra creative shots, etc. The process for the whole graduation pictorial is as follows. First, each student must register to check if he/she has any unsettled balances with the organization. Second, he/she will be given a number and will be asked to wait for his/her turn to wear a toga and to be assigned to a make-up artist. Third, the student will now go to the pictorial room to have his/her pictures taken. The studio provided 2 photographers for the pictorial, one concentrates on the formal shots or the toga shot and the corporate attire shot, while the other directs and captures the creative shots. Professors and administrators of the college were also asked to have their individual photos taken. Similarly, student organizations of the college also had their group photo taken with their respective organizations.

Besides the pictorial, a yearbook would also be published by the end of the school year. This would include all the photos of the graduating students of batch 2017 as well as the pictures of the faculty and administrators. The group pictures of the student organizations would also be included in this yearbook.

              This event may have been stressful and tiresome for the officers of the Senior Organization to ensure that each student is well accommodated. But in the end, after seeing the smiles of the graduating students in their pictures, all the exhaustion just goes away. We’re just happy that even after all the troubles that we have faced throughout the pictorial, we still managed to push through.
