Lecture Series: Bridging the Industry-Academe Gap

CKS College endeavors to create a culture which supports lifelong learning amongst students, faculty, administrators, and alumni. In line with this, the Marketing and Extension Office has lined up prominent speakers from the industry to share their insights through the CKS College Lecture Series.

The first lecture in the series featured Mr. Tomas Medina, who spoke on the topic “Bridging the Industry-Academe Gap” last October 3, 2017. An alumnus of CKS College, Mr. Medina is a Filipino who takes pride in having learned not only to speak, read, and write Chinese Putonghua and Fookien, but also to embrace the Filipino-Chinese culture and thinking.

Mr. Medina shared about how his grasp of various languages, especially the Chinese language, helped him move up from being an entry-level employee to an entrepreneur and owner of his own business. Additionally, he talked about the value of hard work and perseverance. To succeed in the industry, one has to have the right attitude and the flexibility to adapt to change. He also reminded the audience of the need to develop various employable skills, such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership and management skills, critical thinking, and time management.

JMA’s First General Assembly 2017

Junior Marketing Association (JMA) annual General Assembly’s target is information dissemination; ensuring that members of the organization are knowledgeable of all the activities that JMA is holding and will hold for this academic year. This year’s assembly happened last August 2017 and was graced by invited and idtinguised speakers namely Mr. Jomer Gregorio, expert on Digital Marketing, and Ms. Mary Lizchelle Martin on Personal Development.

Mr. Jomer Gregorio shared the different activities on digital marketing, highlighting the internet and social media. Moreover, he elaborated on the concept of “pay-per-click” marketing as a business tool to potential customers or some by passers in social media.

The second speaker, Ms. Mary Lizchelle Martin, talked about personal development. Personal development is an essential component not only to the Filipno-Chinese community, but to everyone who wanted to build lasting professional and personal relationship, both in the work place and at home. Ms. Martin motivates the participants to talk and express themselves to people of any rank without hesitation, quoting her “walang nakakahiya kung wala kang hiya.” Lastly, Ms. Martin also discussed about the different personality of people by using the animals that are known for their unique and specific traits and attitudes like the Philippine Eagle (the doer), Rooster (the talker), Carabao (the watcher), and Tarsier (the thinker).

Indeed, it was a great start for the organization. A balance between professional and personal development has been achieved through the seminars provided. Students will surely apply learned concepts in their everyday activities and future endeavors.

Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago

The CKS College Buwan Ng Wika Celebration, themed “Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago,” was held last August 31, 2017 at the Benjamin Chua Jr. Gymnasium. The purpose of the activity was to develop amongst students a deeper appreciation for the Filipino Language and culture and to strengthen the use of the Filipino language in daily life.

Both Senior High School and College students were treated to various performances and activities organized by the CKS College Society of Motivators, Achievers, and Responsible Teachers (SMART) and the Senior High School Student Government.

The program was comprised of three parts. The first part featured fun and entertaining games such as the Sack Race and Dragon’s Tail In the second part of the program, Education students rendered Filipino and folk song and dance numbers. Capping off the program was the search for Lakan and Lakambini, in which 7 pairs of students representing different strands and courses showcased their talent and personality. Mr. Kirk Raymond Chan (BSBA-Management) was crowned Lakan 2017 and Ms. Marianne Sanots (SHS_HUMMS Strand) was named Lakambini 2017.
