EXCEED 2020: Accounting Towards a New Paradigm


Last February 22, 2020, an Accounting Convention was organized by the DLSU – JPIA chapter entitled Exceed 2020 Accounting towards a new paradigm. The CKSC JPIAns attended the said event and were able to not only gather information about the future of accountancy, but also learn about the different industries in our society today from the distinguished guests.

 

The event started with a plenary, having Tireso Lapidez of KPMG, Mailene Sigue – Bisnar of P&A Grant Thorton, Johnny Ang of SGV & Co. and Maria Gomez of PwC. The guests shared what they look for in the applicants of the firm, such as how they look for talent and ask applicants situational questions. They were also able to share how the accountancy profession affects their personal life, particularly their family. They shared their experience in the accountancy profession as well as the effect of new technology in our society and how we could better adapt to it. Although they have different opinions as to how Artificial Intelligence could affect the accountants, they all agree that this innovation would help the profession in terms of efficiency.

The last segment of the convention was a Symposium by Chairman of the Legal Assistance Group – “Chel” Diokno, President of Valens Research – Joel Litman, Auditor and Assurance Partner of SGV – Benjamin Villacorte and Managing Director of Powerhouseconsultants Company – Mark Fajiculay. Mr. Diokno gave emphasis on integrity of accountants, remarkably saying that what’s the good of knowledge when not used correctly. The speakers taught the participants different things that are relevant in the accountancy profession and encouraged the delegates to do the correct thing in all aspects related to their professions.

Strengthening Ties with National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology


 

The team lead by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Rolance Chua headed to National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) in Kaohsiung Taiwan last December 7, 2019 to attend its Founding Anniversary Celebration and to discuss the details of the academic collaboration.

On January 3, 2020, CKS College signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology to further the cooperation of both education and academic research. The said agreement is considered to include a collaboration of activities such as joint research, lectures, and symposia.

Gawad Kalinga Paradise Heights Family Day


As the saying goes, “Sharing this season together is the greatest gift of all.” ROTARACT Chinatown along with CKS College’s Student Executive Council and Office of Student Life gave their early Christmas gifts to the community of Gawad Kalinga Paradise Heights last December 7, 2019. A lot of people are present to join the fun and bond with their families. Loot bags and various prizes are all lined up waiting to be won by the ones who are willing to play and join games. 

Goodie bags were given to the children that includes school supplies to aid their studies and toys for them to play with.  The Noche Buena packages were received by the parents.

CKS College Entrep Summit 2019


Last November 28, 2019, the School of Business, Accountancy, and HRM in partnership with Fil-Chi Media Productions, Inc. organized the CKS College Entrep Summit 2019 entitled, "From Startup to Success: Lessons from CKSian Entrepreneurs" at the Padre Algue Campus Auditorium. This aims to bring together experts from various disciplines in forums where healthy exchanges of ideas can be undertaken.

The summit featured four of our distinguished alumni that demonstrated their exceptional achievements and success in their respective industries. Mr. Eric Teng from CKSC Batch 80 is the CEO/Chairman of the restaurants Mango Tree Philippines and Genki Sushi Philippines. He is also currently the Marketing Director of Maldita Marketing, Inc. which is a clothing line brand in the Philippines. Together with him is his wife, Mrs. Emelda Teng from CKSC Batch 85. She is the President of  Maldita Marketing, Inc, the Chief Finance Officer of Baby Spice Food Corporation, and President of Patrick Donald Teng Foundation. They discussed about their journey when they first established their businesses. They shared some challenges and failures that they have encountered and how they have learned from these.

 
Another speaker is Mr. Solon Sy from CKS College Batch 93. He is the Vice President for Sales & Marketing of Roosevelt Chemical, Inc. which is a provider of quality paints in the Philippines. Mr. Sy talked about how to manage a family business. He shared some lessons and advises from his parents that lead him to his success today. 
 
 
The last speaker was the Founder and CEO of Kimstore which is a home-grown brand and the Philippines’ most trusted one-stop online shop for the latest in technology devices and gadgets, Ms. Kim Lato from CKS College Batch 2005. Ms. Lato encourages the students to dream and set their goals. She instilled in the minds of the students that they need to have perseverance in the things that they want to accomplish and achieve. It is one of the traits that an Entrepreneur should have to succeed.

JPIA Seminar: "CREDITUM: Seminar on Special Laws I"


CKS College Junior Philippines Institute of Accountants (CKS College -JPIA) held its third seminar last October 18, 2019, Friday, entitled “CREDITUM: Seminar on Special Laws I” which was held at the Conference Room of CKS College Narra Campus, located at the second floor. Atty. Cesar Nickolai Soriano Jr., CPA took part in the said seminar. He was an alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas and Arellano University School of Law. Currently, a reviewer of Taxation and Regulatory Framework for Business Transactions (Business Law) at ReSA, SUCCEED Review Center, and PRIA.

Atty. Soriano gave a recap of the Banking Laws included in the RFBT which would account collectively for nine questions in the CPA Licensure Exam. The speaker also mentioned the need to discuss these laws as they are unfamiliar unlike other laws in the Civil Code such as Obligations and Contracts, Sales, and Partnerships which has real life application unlike the Banking laws which are assumed to be foreign unless studied for the Licensure Exam. The special topics discussed were the Bank Secrecy Law (RA1405, as amended), Unclaimed Balances Act (ACT 3936, as amended by PD 679), Anti-Money Laundering ACT (RA 9160, as amended by RA9194), and Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation Act (RA 3591, as amended). The speaker pointed out that these laws would touch other topics such as crime. Atty. Soriano also made known that the violation of the E-Commerce Act such as hacking and unauthorized access will also be covered in the CPA licensure exam and would account for one question as per BOA.
