CKS College Nutrition Month Celebration 2015

“Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo”

This year’s Nutrition Month theme addressed the increasing prevalence of excessive weight gain, both overweight and obesity rate not only here in the Philippines but also in the global scene. In accordance with PD 491 (1974), known as the Nutrition Act of the Philippines, July was designated as the Nutrition Month to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos. The National Nutrition Council (NNC), a government agency, leads and coordinates the nationwide campaign. For this year, Chiang Kai Shek College was one in the celebration of the Nutrition Month. The activities initiated by the EVMA001 – Events Management Class and Hotel and Restaurant Management Society (HRMS) included:

  1. Posting of “Kumainments” Bulletin Board (whole month) featuring nutrition facts & winners of the photo contest
  2. “#SuntanSayaCKSC”, an online photo contest showcasing the healthy lifestyle of the contestant.
  3. Healthy Cooking Demo by HRMS Officers
  4. Lecture–discussion on healthy eating given by Elaine L. Bañares, RND emphasizing the “Kumainments”.

The Nutrition Month Celebration was observed for the whole month of July and the culminating activities, like cooking demo, healthy eating talk, and awarding of photo contest winner, were done last July 31, 2015:

“Kumainments”

Nutrition Month 2015 highlighted the 10 “Kumainments” in response to the increasing rate of excessive weight gain. Overweight and obesity increase the risk to cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, various forms of cancer and musculoskeletal disorders like arthritis. Overnutrition also poses risk to having hypertension, dyslipidemia (high level of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood), sleep apnea, breathing problems, and liver and gallbladder diseases.

This year’s Nutrition Month campaign aimed to:

a.    increase awareness on the role and importance of proper nutrition and physical activity in the prevention of overweight and obesity;

b.    encourage Filipinos to make positive decisions towards consumption of healthy diets and be physically active to prevent non-communicable diseases as a result of overweight and obesity; and

c.     encourage communities, national and local governments, non-government organizations, private sector, media, the academe, and other stakeholders to put in place an enabling environment that promotes proper nutrition and physical activity among Filipinos to prevent overweight and obesity.

The “Kumainments” emphasizes the following healthy eating guidelines: http://www.nnc.gov.ph/~ziamelinbe/images/nutrition_month/2015_nm_talking_points_final.pdf

Wonka... So Sweet

On July 24, 2015, the Junior Organization held its first general assembly, with the theme “Wonka.”

After the registration, the juniors had fun at the photobooth. The program started with an invocation led by Bryann In. A short video presentation introduced the organization and this year’s batch of officers.

The attendees were then divided into four groups: Fun Dip, Spree, Laffy Taffy, and Runts. The first game was the food race, wherein four representatives from each team were to eat dark chocolate, boiled egg, coke, and hot ramen. The first team to finish all the food was team Runts. The second game was the sack race. Five players from each team participated in the relay, with team Runts also winning. The third game was the balloon race. Three ballons were tied to each person. The rule was that the balloons could not touch the ground, and that if the balloon would fall, the person should go back to the starting point. Team Runts emerged victorious again. In the last game, Follow the Mallows, two representatives from each team were selected. Person A was to follow and find the mallows while the other lwould ead him. Team Spree won this game.

After the games, the juniors enjoyed the chocolate fondue set up in the middle of the room. They dipped ice cream, munchkins, marshmallows, and pancakes in chocolate.

Ending the general assembly, the junior students received one more treat. Each junior was asked to get a balloon from the decorations. Upon popping the balloons, four three winners of gift checks and one winner of a Starbucks card were announced.

ComSoc's General Assembly

Every year, the officers of CKSC Computer Society organize an event for all IT and CS students to meet, get to know one another, and have lots of fun, especially the first year students.

This event is known as the General Assembly. It took place on July 16, 2015 (Thursday) at the 7th floor of Chiang Kai Shek College. The event kicked off with the opening speech of the ComSoc President, Glyza Go, welcoming everyone to the event. The officers were introduced, starting from the president down to the representatives of each batch. The election of the first year batch representative took place and the elected student was Jao Suarez.

The highlight of the General Assembly was the game proper where everyone was excited to participate. Students were assigned into 5 groups. Each group had 1 officer to assist and guide them. The first game was just an icebreaker. It is basically a no-point game. Knowing the name of their teammates and the other team members' name was the main objective of the icebreaker. All the succeeding games after the first were where the real game began. "Pass the message" with a twist was the second game played in the event. This game showed how each team would communicate to each other with only using their facial expressions. No one got the correct answer so the winning team was based on which team got the closest one from the right answer. The 3rd game was called the “Bottoms Up v2.0” followed by the “Chopstick Cornick” and lastly, “The Chubby Bunny” Game.

After the games, the awardees were announced-- starting from the Lanyard Design Contest winner, Maxine Velasco (3rdYear), to the winners of the games. The overall scores were tallied and the results were:

5th Place: Group 2

4th Place: Group 3

3rd Place: Group 4

2nd Place: Group 5

1st Place: Group 1

The giving of snacks plus evaluation of the whole event was next and last but not the least, the closing remarks. It was definitely a fun and fruitful event!!
