Molding Future Entrepreneurs

Organized by the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. in partnership with DTI-BDT, BMSMED, PTTC and DOST-TAPI, “CLICK – a showcase of Innovative Filipino SME’s” featured promising companies from various industries in a trade fair held at the Lucky Chinatown Mall last October 4-6. In line with this event, the CLICK seminar was held on October 5 at the Lucky Chinatown Atrium. Officers and members of the CKS College Junior Management Society (JMS) attended the seminar.

The speaker for the said seminar was Ms. Francine Laboy. She provided tips on setting up a food-based business and explained the regulations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the importance of securing an FDA certification. The FDA continues to implement policies that would protect and promote the right to health of Filipinos and to protect consumers from unethical trade practices and substandard or hazardous products.

Ms. Laboy also discussed the important roles of MSME’s or the micro, small, medium enterprises. The term MSME is defined in RA 9051—an act to promote entrepreneurship by strengthening development and assistance programs to micro, small, and medium scale enterprises. Furthermore, she explained how the ASEAN would benefit SME’s with proposed areas for technical assistance. In closing, Ms. Laboy reminded the audience of the importance of green marketing and social entrepreneurship. As one seeks to succeed in business, he should not forgot to seek the benefit of society and the environment.

Blast from the Past : A Teachers' Day Celebration

From countless seminars organized by the school and various organizations for the students, along came the day that we celebrate and recognize the people whom we fondly call our second parents, the people whom we gain knowledge from & the people who we shall remember for the rest of our lives; who taught, applauded, corrected, challenged, and influenced our thoughts, words and deeds inside the school---our teachers.

Together with the Department of Student Affairs, and various organizations, the Student Executive Council created a simple and yet timeless event for CKS College teachers. On the 26th day of September 2013, the annual teachers’ day celebration was held. This year’s theme was entitled “Walking Down Memory Lane: A Blast from the Past” which was inspired by the 70s and the 80s. The event was hosted by Student Executive Council’s very own, Ms. Kimberly Lagunday and Mr. Dominik Riano.

At exactly 9:00AM the event was started with an invocation led by Ms. Lynnette Chung, the S.E.C. auditor, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and CKSC Hymn. The event formally started with the opening remarks delivered by Ms. Michelle Lau, S.E.C. president, followed by a wonderful rendition of the song “Roar” by none other than the talented Ms. Leriza Sy, a BS Education student.

This celebration would not be complete without the games prepared to help teachers reminisce about their gleeful years during the 70s and 80s-- giving the students a glimpse of what life was way back then with different song numbers coupled with nostalgic dance moves. There were 4 games: charades, CKSCIAN henyo, guess the title, and bring me. Teams of 4 students and 2 faculty members were formed. There were a total of 5 groups: orange, red, green, violet and yellow teams. The players danced their way to win points. In the first game, Charades, each member must pick a paper from a box and dance based on the title of the dance indicated on the paper, for his teammates to guess. This game definitely gave the teachers as well as the students a fun-filled dancing fever with some of the professors giving all what they’ve got to get their 80s vibes pumping.

After the 2nd game, everyone paused for a while to watch an AVP presentation prepared by different student organizations to thank the teachers for their unwavering support, sacrifices and endless passion to teach their students. Afterwards, the event continued on with the 2 remaining games, followed by an exhilarating dance performance by the CKS College Dance Republic, led by Mr. Harvey Garcia, S.E.C. program coordinator.

After the dance number, the orange team was declared the winner with their team comprising of: Mr. Ankiat Byron Co, Mr. Jeccer Cusi, Allyssa Hao, Howard Chi, Andrew Chiu, and Aaron Sy. They were awarded by Dr. Dory Poa, president of Chiang Kai Shek College.

Students and faculty members were also recognized and awarded by Mr. Melchor Te for being the best dressed in the event. Dr. Neo Danao won Best Male Outfit for Teachers and Ms. Janet Tallod won Best Famale Outfit for Teachers. Ms. Regine Lao won best dressed among students.

Afterwards, a token of appreciation from students was awarded by Mrs. Carmelita Espino to Dr. Neo Danao for his 20 years of passionate teaching. Also recognized were Ms. Chang Chi and Ms. Connie Tan for serving CKS College for 25 and 30 years, respectively.

The Student Executive Council further showed their appreciation to the professors by handing each a rose, which symbolizes their sincerest thankfulness and gratitude for their passion to teach the students. After the closing remarks of CKSC Registrar, Mr. Melchor Te, Student Executive Council officers surprised everyone with a special dance number.

After lunch, students, teachers, and maintenance personnel played in the traditional dice game, organized annually by the Student Executive Council.

ASEAN 2015 : The Future Ahead of Us

The “Towards ASEAN 2015” seminar was conducted by the Junior Management Society on the 19th of September 2013 at the CKSC-AVR.  The speaker for this seminar was Mr. Edilberto Viray. He is a graduate of and a current professor in San Beda College. 80 students and special guests attended the said seminar.

He has received several awards and recognitions. He was awarded the 2013 Outstanding Business Educator in the Field of Economics by The Philippine Council of Deans and Educators in Business. He has also published books such as the Principles of Economics with Taxation and Agrarian Reform and Principles of Management.

Mr. Viray explained that the ASEAN was formed in the year 1967, and currently, members include Brunei Darussaiam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. ASEAN is where all the ten countries come together to build a better life for everyone. Together as ten, we are stronger than one country alone.

ASEAN promotes 3 P’s: peace, prosperity, and people. The ten countries must work together to keep the region safe. ASEAN countries don’t fight one another, they help one another. If we can have peace, we can have prosperity. We can have a stronger economic development. We can also attract more investors and businesses will grow and there will be more jobs and opportunities for our countrymen. Someday, people can work in any ASEAN country of their choice. Agriculture will become more advanced. Our quality of life will also improve. The ASEAN will help one another to prosper. But the most important part is the people. ASEAN governments work hard to ensure that people can enjoy a better life. You are never too young to be a part of the ASEAN Community. Be proud as an ASEAN citizen and look forward to what the future holds.

Even though the seminar was very short, much was learned from Mr. Viray about the ASEAN. The interest of many students was piqued as they felt excited about the future. So what do you think is in store for us? We can only wait and see.
