Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management


Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) covers a balanced treatment of several areas in the hospitality industry such as culinary operations, food and beverage operations, lodging operations, customer relationship management, and MICE operations. It broadens the knowledge and skills of the students to prepare them to the ever-changing and on-demand hospitality industry.

A graduate of BS in Hospitality Management should be able to:

1. Produce food products and services complying with enterprise standards.

2. Apply management skills in F&B service and operations.

3. Perform and provide full guest cycle services for front office.

4. Perform and maintain various housekeeping services for guest and facility operations.

EINTEG - Entrepreneurship Integration

Integration of parts 1 and 2 of the entrepreneurial perspective of business opportunity analysis and  legal issues on intellectual property and exposes the student to the financial challenges of the new venture. It also lays out alternative strategies for growth as the business goes through the expansion stage. Ending the business venture is also discussed to tenable the student to have a comprehensive idea of the business life cycle.

MICECO - Microeconomics

This is a course that deals with the principles, concepts and theories of Microeconomics.  The course covers methods and tools of economic analysis; organizational structure of an economy and economic systems; supply and demand analysis including the concept of elasticity; equilibrium price and price controls; theory of consumer behavior and concept of marginal analysis; theory of production, cost and revenue; and theory of markets. Practical application of the principles, theories and concepts to real economics situations and/or problems is an integral part of the course, which are vital to managerial decision-making.

MANACT - Management Accounting

This course is a basic course that combines the knowledge of management practice and makes use of accounting information for decision-making. It introduces a paradigm shift from preparation of financial statements to actual relevant usage in day-to-day management activities. The course exposes students to the preparation of internal reports tailor-fitted for management decision-making. The planning and controlling of management activities are emphasized through accounting and mathematical techniques that will allow for informed judgment.

OPERES- Operations Research

In this course, students will learn to formulate, analyze, and solve mathematical models that represent real-world problems. In the first two-thirds of the course, deterministic models, in which no uncertainty exists, will be discussed. This section of the course will cover linear programming and the simplex algorithm, as well as related analytical topics. It will also introduce other types of mathematical models, including transportation, integer, and non-linear models. The remaining third of the course will cover stochastic models that handle the randomness inherent in most real systems. Topics will include inventory analysis, forecasting, and decision theory. The key emphasis is on problem formulation, model building, data analysis, solution techniques, and evaluation of alternative designs/processes in complex systems.

OBLCON - Obligations and Contracts

This course deals with the basic principles of law in relation to contracts and obligations. Topics include: the nature, sources, kinds, and extinguishments of contracts; general legal concepts of enforceable rights and obligations; types of laws and the national legal system; nature, purpose, scope, and key principles of national legislation; sources of obligations; kinds of obligations under the Civil Code; specific circumstances affecting obligations in general; duties of obligor to do or not to do; extinguishments of obligation; general principles of the law of contracts; elements and stages of contracts; freedom from contract and limitation; object of contracts; considerations of contracts; formalities; interpretations and reformations of contracts; and defective contracts.

PRITAX - Principles of Taxation

This subject covers the basic concepts, principles and laws applicable to income taxation and income taxes such as Basic, Final and Capital Gains Taxes.  This also includes discussion about the functions, duties and authorities of the BIR.  Discussions involve the computation of taxable income of the different income taxpayers such as individuals, estates, trusts, partnerships and corporations.  The determination of taxable income entails the calculation of gross income inclusions and exclusions, the allowed deductions from gross income as well as the tax credits deductible against the yearly income tax due.

STRAMA - Strategic Management and Business Policy

The course exposes the student to the basic nature and character of top management decision-making, and gets him/her involved in the analysis, formulation, and implementation of corporate strategies and policies. Furthermore, it gives him/her the opportunity to apply basic concepts and techniques s/he has learned about the various functional areas of management.

EBPIM1 and EBPIM 2 - Business Plan Implementation 1 and 2

These two courses which are five units each are designed to encourage and allow the students to actually implement the business plan they have produced in EPLAN1 and EPLAN2. The students are expected to set up the project as a business activity where actual revenue generation can be realized.

BUSTAX - Business Tax

This course involves an intensive study of the business and transfer tax system, including the value-added tax, percentages taxes, estate tax and gift tax.  The relationship between these business and transfer taxes are also emphasized.  The policy underpinnings of wealth transfer taxation, and the reasons for the recent erosion in its political support, will be explored.

FINMA2 - Financial Management 2

This course involves the study of the different financial techniques used in capital investment analysis and evaluation for making long-term financial decisions. Different sources of long-term funds, techniques in long-term financing and different ways of computing for values of long-term investments and returns will also be discussed. Key topics include the time value of money, capital budgeting, the cost of capital, leverage and capital structure, dividend policy, and mergers, LBO’s, divestitures, and business failures. Both qualitative and quantitative tools utilized in financial management shall be discussed and assessed as tools in management decision making.

PRIMAO- Principles of Management and Organization

This course is an introduction to the management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. It will focus on the theories and fundamental concepts of management and emphasize the basic roles, skills and functions of management, with special emphasis on managerial responsibility for effective and efficient achievement of goals. Topics such as social responsibility, managerial ethics, and the importance of multi-national organizations shall also be discussed. Furthermore, the class will cover the evolution of management thought, function, and practice, and will emphasize current approaches and emerging trends.

HUBEOR - Human Behavior in Organizations

This course is designed to give students the basic knowledge of human behavior needed to create a more effective organizational environment. The course shall be broken down into three segments: (1) the behavior of individuals in organizations, (2) group behavior in organizations, and (3) how these behaviors affect the overall performance of organizations. Particular emphasis will be placed on individual differences, attitude, motivation, job satisfaction, communication, leadership, stress, change, and organizational culture.

PRIMAR - Principles of Marketing

The course gives the student a deeper understanding of core marketing concepts, activities, and applications, and identifies the role of marketing management in developing competitive advantage for business and service establishments.  It also aims to develop the student’s ability to appreciate and use contemporary models in marketing management for sound decision making. Students shall be trained to design and implement product, price, place, and promotion strategies, in order to help a company achieve its strategic and financial objectives, while at the same time, develop and sustain long term customer relationships.

ACT102E - Financial Accounting 1

This introductory course exposes the business student to the nature, scope and functions of the accounting discipline.  It deals primarily with the accounting process of transforming raw economic data into useful financial accounting information.  Typical transactions, documents and accounting problems of a single proprietorship engaged in a service or merchandising business provide the framework for discussion.  The concepts of internal control and computerized accounting system will be initially introduced in this course.

ACT304E - Financial Accounting 2

This is a continuation of the first course in Accounting.  Initially it will deal with a review of the accounting process and principles in order to reinforce knowledge, competence and skills.  The main part covers transactions, accounting problems and financial statements peculiar to the partnership and corporate form of business using the merchandising business as framework.  It will include the preparation of simple statement of changes in partnership capital and statement of changes in retained earnings.  The voucher system in introduced in this course.  Likewise, non-cast manufacturing accounting is also to be introduced. The course exposes the students to computerized accounting system for merchandising business.

This course focuses on the correct use of the English language as a tool that shapes effective communication, both written and spoken, in the business world. It tackles the fundamentals of technical writing which provide students with adequate writing practice through the process beginning from prewriting, writing and rewriting stages of different technical papers in particular business letters and reports.

BASFIN - Basic Finance

This course will focus on what business firms should do to achieve their financial goals and how they can optimize the owners’ wealth. Key topics include finance function, the operating environment of finance, time value of money, risk and return, tools of financial analysis and planning, utilization of funds, acquisition of funds, credit and banking, financial intermediaries, financial markets, foreign exchange markets, and monetary policy.

This course is designed to teach students the theoretical approach to information technology and management information systems within a business/computer science environment.  Practical business computer applications will emphasize word processing and spreadsheets. FINMA1 - Financial Management 1

This course will cover an introduction to financial/corporate management. It will focus on what business firms should do to achieve their financial goal, which is to optimize the owner’s wealth. Specifically the course will include discussion of the finance function, the operating environment of finance, key concepts such as time value of money, risk and return, tools of financial statement analysis and planning, and financial asset valuation. As an additional part of the course, some selected personal financial management topics are also included in the course such as: use and source of credit from non-bank institutions, and an individual’s basic investment selection biases on ordinary shares, bonds, and mutual funds.

CHINWD - Chinese Wordprocessing

The Cang Jie input method is a system by which Chinese characters may be entered into a computer by means of a standard keyboard. It is based on the graph logical aspect of the characters wherein each basic, graphical unit is represented by a basic character component, of which there are 24 in all, each mapped to a particular letter key on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Cangjie is one of the very few input methods that can be found on most modern personal computers without the user having to download or install any additional software. CangJie allows keying even if you do not know the pronunciation of characters. CangJie, therefore, helps students of Chinese to remember characters’ shapes and structure.

Electronic Commerce is a modern business methodology that addresses the needs of organizations, merchants, and consumers to cut costs while improving the quality of goods and services and increasing the speed of service delivery. In this course, students will examine critical information technologies that provide a basis for electronic commerce, and their application in a variety of sectors and industries. It will begin with coverage of the tools, skills and business concepts that surround the emergence of electronic commerce and the consequences of applying these information technologies to different commercial processes from both an operational and strategic perspective. It will also explore several of the problems surrounding electronic commerce such as security, privacy, content selection and rating, intellectual property rights, authentication, encryption, acceptable use policies, and legal liabilities.

This course deals with the law on sales covering contracts for the sale of goods including nature, forms, and requisites, distinguished from dacion en pago, cession in payment, contract for a piece of work, and barter; earnest money as distinguished from option money; rights/obligations of vendee and vendor; remedies of unpaid seller; warranties; sale with a right to repurchase or conventional redemption and legal redemption; sale on credit; installment sales (personal-property- Recto Law, real property- Maceda law). It also covers the law on agency; its nature, form and kinds; obligation of the agent and the principal; and modes of extinguishments. Also discussed are laws on credit transactions such as loan, deposit, guarantee, pledge, real mortgage, antichresis, and chattel mortgage. Other relevant laws on commerce and trade such as law on investments shall also be discussed.
